Machine Learning Identifies Chronic Low Back Pain Patients from an Instrumented Trunk Bending and Return Test

- Article scientifique
Article scientifique
Nowadays, the better assessment of low back pain (LBP) is an important challenge, as it is
the leading musculoskeletal condition worldwide in terms of years of disability. The objective of this
study was to evaluate the relevance of various machine learning (ML) algorithms and Sample Entropy
(SampEn), which assesses the complexity of motion variability in identifying the condition of low back
pain. ...
Adiabatic Invariant of Center-of-Mass Motion during Walking as a Dynamical Stability Constraint on Stride Interval Variability and Predictability

Article scientifique
Human walking exhibits properties of both stability and variability. On the one
hand, the variability of the interval of time between heel strikes is autocorrelated, i.e., not randomly
organized. On the other hand, walking is highly stereotyped and arguments from general mechanics
suggest that the stability of gait can be assessed according to invariant properties. This study aims
at proposing ...

Many-Quark Interactions: Large-N Scaling and Contribution to Baryon Masses

- Article scientifique
Article scientifique
Starting from an effective Hamiltonian modeling, of a baryon made of N identical quarks in
the large-N approach of QCD, we obtain analytical formulas, allowing to estimate the contributions
of multiquark interactions to the baryon mass. The cases of vanishing (mass spectrum) and nonvanishing
(baryon melting) temperatures are treated.
Head Pitch Angular Velocity Discriminates (Sub-)Acute Neck Pain Patients and Controls Assessed with the DidRen Laser Test

Article scientifique
Understanding neck pain is an important societal issue. Kinematic data from sensors may help to gain insight into the pathophysiological mechanisms associated with neck pain through a quantitative sensorimotor assessment of one patient. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential usefulness of artificial intelligence with several machine learning (ML) algorithms in assessing neck ...
Sample Entropy as a Tool to Assess Lumbo-Pelvic Movements in a Clinical Test for Low-Back-Pain Patients

- Article scientifique
Article scientifique
Low back pain (LBP) obviously reduces the quality of life but is also the world’s leading
cause of years lived with disability. Alterations in motor response and changes in movement patterns
are expected in LBP patients when compared to healthy people. Such changes in dynamics may be
assessed by the nonlinear analysis of kinematical time series recorded from one patient’s motion.
Since sample ...
High Specificity of Single Inertial Sensor-Supplemented Timed Up and Go Test for Assessing Fall Risk in Elderly Nursing Home Residents

Article scientifique
The Timed Up and Go test (TUG) is commonly used to estimate the fall risk in the elderly. Several ways to improve the predictive accuracy of TUG (cameras, multiple sensors, other clinical tests) have already been proposed. Here, we added a single wearable inertial measurement unit (IMU) to capture the residents’ body center-of-mass kinematics in view of improving TUG’s predictive accuracy. The aim ...
Kinematics and aesthetics of grand battement and d velopp after static and dynamic hamstrings stretching in adolescents

Adolescent recreational dancers mostly use static hamstring stretching. However, dynamic stretching
seems to influence athletic performance as well. Is one of these stretching methods more favorable to
the execution of a grand battement or d velopp (two ballet movements) in dancers? Sixteen participants
performed a grand battement and a d velopp under three conditions: without stretching, ...
Walking kinematics in subjects with asymptomatic genu recurvatum: lower limb joint angles and effect of speed

The aim of this study was to carry out a kinematic analysis of the lower limb during gait in subjects with
asymptomatic genu recurvatum. The sagittal plane kinematics of the lower limb during gait in a group
of 13 subjects with genu recurvatum was shown to be significantly different to that of a group of 13
control healthy subjects. An increase in extension and a decrease in flexion of the hip ...

Introduction: The variability of human walking has been studied for about twenty years. It appears not
to be random but long-term autocorrelated, i.e. on time scales corresponding to several hundreds of gait
cycles. It has been shown that the central nervous system (CNS) plays an important role in this
variability. Indeed, people with CNS alterations have a different autocorrelation pattern than ...
