Abstract

The present volume is comprised, for the most part, of the proceedings from the International Workshop “Pierre Duhem, cent ans après (1916-2016)” which was organized to mark the occasion of the first centenary since the death of this renowned French scientist. Aside from two additional contributions (those of F.R. Leite and L. Roumengous), it also includes the original French text edition (taken from the manuscript preserved by the Institut de France) of one of the encyclopedia articles, published by Pierre Duhem in the “Catholic Encyclopedia” of 1911, entitled “Physics, History of”. Having been largely overlooked even by scholars, this text seemed worthy of being placed center stage, particularly considering its broad chronological scope (from Ptolemy to Helmholtz) and its own unifying perspective. This text edition is accompanied by two studies which are entirely devoted to it.
