    • Q-balls and charged Q-balls in a two-scalar field theory with generalized Henon-Heiles potentialPeer reviewedOpen access

30 avril 2024, Buisseret, Fabien; Brihaye, Yves, CeREF Technique
      Article scientifique
We construct Q-ball solutions from a model consisting of one massive scalar field ξ and one massive complex scalar field ϕ interacting via the cubic couplings g1ξϕ ϕ þ g2ξ3, typical of Henon-Heiles-like potentials. Although being formally simple, these couplings allow for Q-balls. In one spatial dimension, analytical solutions exist, either with vanishing or nonvanishing ϕ. In three spatial ...
    • Diffusion in Phase Space as a Tool to Assess Variability of Vertical Centre-of-Mass Motion during Long-Range WalkingPeer reviewedOpen access

      Article scientifique
When a Hamiltonian system undergoes a stochastic, time-dependent anharmonic perturbation, the values of its adiabatic invariants as a function of time follow a distribution whose shape obeys a Fokker–Planck equation. The effective dynamics of the body’s centre-of-mass during human walking is expected to represent such a stochastically perturbed dynamical system. By studying, in phase space, the ...

Recent advances in electronics have led to sensors whose sizes and weights are such that they can be placed on living systems without impairing their natural motion and habits. They may be worn on the body as accessories or as part of the clothing and enable personalized mobile information processing. Wearable sensors open the way for a nonintrusive and continuous monitoring of body orientation, ...
    • ZN-balls: Solitons from ZN-symmetric scalar field theoryPeer reviewedOpen access

28 novembre 2022, BUISSERET, Fabien; Brihaye, Yves, CeREF Technique
      Article scientifique
We discuss the conditions under which static, finite-energy, configurations of a complex scalar field ϕ with constant phase and spherically-symmetric norm exist in a potential of the form V(ϕ*ϕ, ϕ^N, ϕ^*N) with N ∈ N and N ≥ 2, i.e., a potential with a ZN-symmetry. Such configurations are called ZN-balls. We build explicit solutions in (3 + 1)-dimensions from a model mimicking effective field ...

31 mai 2022, BUISSERET, Fabien; Willemyns, Cintia; Semay, Claude, CeREF Technique
      Article scientifique
Starting from an effective Hamiltonian modeling, of a baryon made of N identical quarks in the large-N approach of QCD, we obtain analytical formulas, allowing to estimate the contributions of multiquark interactions to the baryon mass. The cases of vanishing (mass spectrum) and nonvanishing (baryon melting) temperatures are treated.

Low back pain (LBP) obviously reduces the quality of life but is also the world’s leading cause of years lived with disability. Alterations in motor response and changes in movement patterns are expected in LBP patients when compared to healthy people. Such changes in dynamics may be assessed by the nonlinear analysis of kinematical time series recorded from one patient’s motion. Since sample ...

17 février 2022, BUISSERET, Fabien; Schütz, Gaston; Stoffel, Pierre-Loup; DIERICK, Frédéric, CeREF Technique
      Article scientifique
The Timed Up and Go test (TUG) is commonly used to estimate the fall risk in the elderly. Several ways to improve the predictive accuracy of TUG (cameras, multiple sensors, other clinical tests) have already been proposed. Here, we added a single wearable inertial measurement unit (IMU) to capture the residents’ body center-of-mass kinematics in view of improving TUG’s predictive accuracy. The aim ...

05 août 2021, White, Olivier; DIERICK, Frédéric; Dehouck, Victor; BUISSERET, Fabien; Boulanger, Nicolas, CeREF Technique
      Article scientifique
The role of gravity in human motor control is at the same time obvious and difficult to isolate. It can be assessed by performing experiments in variable gravity. We propose that adiabatic invariant theory may be used to reveal nearly conserved quantities in human voluntary rhythmic motion, an individual being seen as a complex time-dependent dynamical system with bounded motion in phase space. ...
